'Voices 2025: Alvaro Barrington interviewed by Marc Spiegler'

Synopsis

This conversation at the legendary Business of Fashion Voices conference framed Alvaro Barrington as a quintessential 21st-century artist, moving fluidly between art, fashion and hip-hop culture. Drawing on the culture of Bronx hip-hop parties—where graffiti, music, dance and style coexisted—he argued that these disciplines had always belonged to the same creative ecosystem, even if industries later separated them. He described his rejection of art-market rules about representation in favor of what he described, half-jokingly, as a “polyamorous” model of collaboration. At its core, his practice is driven by a strong sense of ambition—“People asking me to be mediocre really upsets me”— and honesty a stance that shapes both his prolific output and unfiltered presence on social media.
