Synopsis
Reviewing the 2005 Istanbul Biennal, my first of many. Turkish curator Vasif Kortun and Britain's Charles Esche spotlighted many then-lesser-known artists such as Nedko Solako and Dan Perjovschi. A parallel exhibition 'YaYa2', curated by Emre Baykal and Fulya Erdemci took art to the city's vibrants streets, to wonderful effect. For me, it marked the beginning of my long love affair with the city... I've been back a dozen times.
