'Stefan Thiel' (Review)

Marc Spiegler
Synopsis

Stefan Thiel’s show at Galerie Mai 36 gave an old technique — scherenschnitte (i.e. papercutting, which my Mom practiced) — a darker, more modern edge. His images felt photographic in composition but were made entirely by hand, cut by X-Acto knife into shadow-like silhouettes. Using simple materials to depict crumbling buildings, tangled trees, and quiet water scenes, Thiel made delicate material feel unexpectedly weighty.
