Synopsis
When Kaspar Fleischmann opened Zurich's Galerie zur Stockeregg in 1979, photography still struggled for legitimacy in the German-speaking art world. But just as photography had become one of the market’s most dynamic sectors, Fleischmann chose to “leave the party at its peak,” stepping back to focus on private dealing. Vintage masterworks were getting harder to source. “Too many people have bought it up," Fleischmann explained. "Too much of it is in museums now and will never be sold. There’s good stuff still at $100,000, but not at $30,000.” And that gap had quietly edged out many of the collectors Fleischmann had cultivated for decades.
