Synopsis
Short Art Newpaper Fair daily piece on the shift towards mid-career artists in the wake of a speculative frenzy around around younger artists. Suddenly John Baldessari, Richard Tuttle, Richard Artschwager, Christian Marclay, Rudolf Stingel, Sherrie Levine et al seemed under-priced in comparison to their (sometimes literal) students. “People are finally waking up to the fact that the younger end of the market is over-priced and the mid-career artists are a total bargain by comparison,” declared Sean Kelly. "Especially Lorna Simpson. We just adjusted Lorna’s rates upwards by 35% and she’s still inexpensive. Smart people have stopped buying fashion and started buying substance.”
