'Expecting the unexpected'

Marc Spiegler
Synopsis

My London 2003 roundup, timed to the launch of the first Frieze Art Fair, the first to be independently organized by an art publication. "Our readers are the people who attend contemporary art fairs, and our advertisers are the people who exhibit in them," explained the magazine's co-publisher, Amanda Sharp. "We are based in London, the only art world capital without a major contemporary fair, even though people have been coming here for years because the scene is so vibrant." Held in Regent's Park under a glass-and-fiberglass tent designed by David Adjaye, the fair featured have 10 commissioned artist projects (which I loved and missed enormously as they fell victim to budget pressures).
