'When Human Beings Are the Canvas'

Synopsis

My long feature on artist Santiago Sierra, whose pieces sparked controversy for the social truths they uncomfortably revealed. Even for him it was not easy. After paying a group of prostitutes to allow themselves to have a horizontal line tattooed across their backs, his breakthrough piece, he retreated. "I knew intellectually that I had to continue with this concept,” he explains. “But I spent a year afterward not doing anything more involving people.”
